Applicants

To practice as a Respiratory Therapist in Ontario, you must be registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO).

The role of the CRTO is to regulate the profession of Respiratory Therapy in the public interest. As part of this mandate, the CRTO sets the standard for entry-level requirements for safe and ethical practice. The National Competency Framework (NCF) is a list of competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and judgment) considered essential for entering the practice of Respiratory Therapy in Ontario.

While all applicants must meet the CRTO’s Registration Requirements, there are different pathways to registration. This section is designed to provide information on the application process as it applies to graduates of Canadian RT programs, Respiratory Therapists working elsewhere in Canada, and internationally educated Respiratory Therapists or other health care professionals. For more information, please select one of the links on the left.

You may not work as a Respiratory Therapist or use the Respiratory Therapist title or designation (e.g., GRT, RRT) in Ontario until you have received written confirmation from the CRTO that your certificate of registration has been issued. Working as an RT includes participating in an employer clinical orientation or training.
